Mullabrack Lose out in
Championship
Sunday August 24th
saw Mullabrack take on Forkhill in the quarter-final of the
junior championship at Carrickcruppin.
In fine conditions, the
first action of the game was a wide for Mullabrack but was
quickly followed by the first score of the game coming from
Benny Dougan of Mullabrack. Forkhill replied with a point and a
free to take the lead. Benny Dougan equalised with a free.
Forkhill followed up
with a further point and Mullabracks Gerard Agnew responded with
a converted free. Darragh Smith then pointed for Mullabrack with
the score of the game after a fine solo run. Forkhill edged in
front with a point followed by a goal to leave the score 1:5 to
0:4 after 25 minutes.
Fokhill hit the
Mullabrack net for the second time to increase their lead but
Mullabrack did not drop their heads and when “Butler” was fouled
he obliged with a point. Phelim Sands scored a final point
before half-time to leave the half-time score 2:7 to 0:6 in
favour of Forkhill.
The second-half saw
Mullabrack veteran John Conlon being introduced and they started
strongly with Gerard Agnew winning a free which he converted to
close the gap. Agnew converted a further free and this was
quickly followed by a point from centre half-back Collie Murphy.
At this stage it was all
Mullabrack. Marty Rice won the ball from the kick-out where he
found Gerard Agnew who was again fouled. The referee awarded a
thirteen metre free which was scored. John Conlons point reduced
the margin to three with fifteen minutes to go. Despite having
a number of scoring chances Mullabrack were unable to further
reduce the lead and their opponents scored the final two points
of the match. It just wasn’t to be Mullabracks night but they
can be proud of their display. Stephen Sands and Stephen Baxter
in the full-back line were outstanding as was goalkeeper Pearse
McGuigan. Phelim Sands was steady in midfield. In the forwards
Gerard Agnew and Benny Dougan took some great scores. Final
Score Mullabrack 0:11 Forkhill 2:10.
