Mullabrack back to winning
ways!
On Friday past Mullabrack
travelled to Darkley to play Phelim Bradys. Fresh from their Junior
Championship semi-final defeat, Mullabrack needed to re-fix their
focus on the league.
The game proved a very one
sided affair with Hugh McSorley, Christopher Dougan and Tommy
O’Hagan resolute in defence allowing Brady’s a mere 5 points total.
At the other end Gerard Agnew was having a field day score 13 points
from play. A feat he managed in the same fixture last year.
Mullabrack came away from the game with a 1:18 to 5 points victory
and 2 league points to take to Sunday’s game against the Grange.
The Grange had played
Mullabrack “off the park” earlier in the year, so this was always
going to be a tough game for Mullabrack to win on Sunday past.
Mullabrack were missing two key players, but Paul Jordan and Martin
Rice filled in for the respective vacancies.
Mullabrack started quickly
and within a matter of minutes had registered a number of shots just
off target. The eventual opening scores were taken after 10 minutes.
Good work by Dara Smith and Eamon Boylan allowed Taff Toal in for a
brace. Phelim Sands in the midfield was winning most of the high
ball. Stephen McKinney was showing all his experience in defence and
the work horse John Conlon was winning much of the breaking ball
around the half forward line. By half time Mullabrack were ahead by
6 points to 3 points, but on reflection should have been in front by
more.
At the start of the second
half Pip Agnew got hold of the ball 30 yards out on the right hand
touch line and sent it between the posts to rapturous applause from
the side line. After this the Grange hit their purple patch scoring
3 points on the bounce. A well worked free by John Conlon left Taff
Toal to put the ball through the posts however again the ball was
sent to the right and wide. At 7 points to 6 points it looked as if
the Grange were getting back into the match, but then Taff Toal
popped up with one of his trade mark runs. He was brought down 25
yards out from goal. Pip Agnew hit the resulting free only to see it
bounce of the post and into the arms of Eamon Boylan who sent it
into the back of the net.
Soon after Mullabrack lost
Stephen McKinney to injury and Gary Gorman filled in at the half
back. With 15 minutes to go Mullabrack had their tails up and Pip
Agnew once again sent over a booming free from 30 yards out leaving
the score at 1 goal and 8 points for Mullabrack and 6 points for the
Grange. Martin Rice and Dara Smith then both got on the score sheet
for Mullabrack before the Grange replied with two points of their
own. In the dying minutes the move of the game saw Phelim Sands win
the high ball at midfield. Passing two defenders he laid a ball off
to Dara Smith on the right hand side and Taff Toal popped up in side
to slot the ball over the bar for the final score of 1:11 for
Mullabrack to 8 points for the Grange. The club wish Christopher
Dougan and Stephen McKinney a speedy recovery from injuries
sustained in the games over the weekend.
