Sunday 29th April
Mullabrack 0:4 to
Grange 2:10
A very hot Sunday afternoon
brought Mullabrack to the Grange on the back of two good wins in
division 4. The game started quickly with a couple of near misses by
both teams, however it was the Grange which struck first with two
points from play before Pip Agnew replied for “the brack”.
With only eight minutes gone
Mullabrack found themselves further behind with the Grange pegging
on two further points, just before they put away two opportunist
goals.
A high ball into the
Mullabrack area which was not cleared left the Grange full forward
clear to strike the ball past Danny O’Hanlon in the Mullabrack goal.
Mullabrack needed a quick response which came through Phelim Sands
who caught a high ball in the Grange area and struck it over the
bar. The resurgence however was short lived. Once gain the
Mullabrack defence failed to clear a long ball into the Grange full
forward. He was left open with only the keeper to beat, however
Danny O’Hanlon pulled off a wonderful save. The ball however dropped
into a crowded goal area and once again the Grange took full
advantage by driving a low ball into the left hand corner of the
Mullabrack goal.
The changes in the
Mullabrack team then came ‘thick and fast’. Phelim Sands moved to
full forward with Eamon Boylan retiring to the side line,
Christopher Dougan was replaced by Collie Murphy and Sean Agnew
moved into midfield. Once again Mullabrack attempted to stem the
Grange tide. Taff Toal worked tirelessly in the forward line and won
a free just before half time to leave the half time score 2:6 to 3
points in Favour of the Grange.
The second half started with
plenty of gusto. Mullabrack fresh from strong words from the manager
at half time attempted to take control of the game. Possession
proved critical. Mullabrack certainly had plenty of the ball,
however their decision making accounted for their undoing. It was
all too clear that the Grange had the upperhand forcing “the brack”
players into hasty hand passes and poor kicking.
The Grange continued to play
basic football which resulted in four more points in the second
half. Taff Toal replied for Mullabrack, but it was a consolation
score. John Conlon and Collie Murphy proved to be Mullabrack’s best;
working tirelessly to the final whistle. Poor performances, poor
decision making and a lack of respect for the other team left
Mullabrack empty handed. A very dejected team listened quietly to
the managers summation of the day and it was clear that many were
reflecting on their performances.
