Gary Gorman with
the Referee and Dorsey Captain
After a tight fought Championship game earlier
in the month between these two teams, this was always going to be a
similar affair.
Dorsey started very quickly and immediately it
was clear they were out for some revenge from their championship
loss to Mullabrack. Within the first 10 minutes Dorsey had kicked 4
points without reply. All was going very much in Dorsey's favour and
they were much better at collecting breaking ball in the middle of
the field. Finally a ball won by Dara Smith who was foraging from
the right corner tsent Benny Dougan on a run towards the Dorsey
area, only or him to be dragged down. The corresponding free was
sent over the bar from Pip Agnew. A good ball in from Gary Gorman
from the Dorsey kick out to Gerard Agnew saw Mullabrack register
their second score.
However the Dorsey left corner forward was
giving Mullabrack all sorts of problems and Kevin Smith was switched
to pick him up to good effect, however it did not stop him getting a
fifth point with 15 minutes to go to half time. Mullabrack found it
difficult to send good ball into the forward line due to tenacious
tackling from the Dorsey midfield and half forward line. When Hugh
McSorley did hit Benny Dougan with the ball, smooth inter-passing
between Benny, Gerard Agnew and finally Taff Toal left the the silky
skilled forward free to send a well hit shot over the bar. Within
the closing stages of the first half Sean Agnew and Phelim Sands
were having to battle hard in the Mullabrack midfield and when
finally Sands was fouled on the far right hand side in front of goal
Benny Dougan stepped up to hit the free. Instead of aiming for the
target, he sent a good ball to Eamon Boylan on the edge of the
square who struck a lovely point over his right hand shoulder
leaving the half time score 5 points a piece.
At the start of the second half Mullabrack then
lost Taff Toal to injury and brought on Marty Rice in the right hand
corner. He won a good free early on, however Gerard Agnew could not
convert. It was then a case of 'deja vu ' as Dorsey racked up four
unanswered points as in the first half, before Pip Agnew replied
from a free for Mullabrack. Problems continued to propagate within
the Mullabrack half back and midfield area. Poor passes to the
forward area and the continued lack of wining breaking ball provided
the platform for Dorsey to assert their dominance during long
periods in the second half. With 15 minutes to go Charlie Agnew
changed the midfield set up and brought Sean Paul Henry into the
fray at right half corner and moved Dara Smith into midfield with
Sean Agnew giving way. Smith to his credit was having a good game
and finally Mullabrack began to catch good ball in the midfield. A
good run by Dara Smith sent Phelim Sands through and a quick hand
pass to Eamon Boylan saw a good shot just fly pass the right hand
side upright. Dorsey and Mullabrack exchanged scores moving into the
final ten minutes of the game, however it was Dorsey who stretched
their lead with two further points leaving the score 12 points to 7
points.
Mullabrack were forcing the game at this point
and had a good goal chance from Gerard Agnew stopped on the line.
Mullabrack made a final change bringing John Conlon on for Paddy
Toal and from a good pass Conlon sent the ball to Benny Dougan on
the right hand side of the goal. Aiming for the square Benny sent an
opportunistic looping shot towards the Dorsey goal which dropped in
beyond the keeper. It was a little too late for the Mullabrack cause
and from the resulting kick out the referee below for full time with
the final score in Dorsey's favour at 12 points to Mullabracks 1
goal and 7 points. Mullabracks best came from Dara Smith and Kevin
Smith who worked hard for the cause. Special mention should go again
to the Mullabrack full back line of Tommy O'Hagan, Stephen Sands and
Hugh McSorely for another magnificent performance.
