PRESS
RELEASE
Cardiac
Screening
March 12, 2007
Two weeks ago the Medical, Scientific and
Welfare Committee of the GAA announced a number of new initiatives
relevant to medical issues within the Association, including details
of their plans to address the issue of Sudden Cardiac Death.
All players over the age of 14 years have been
recommended by the committee to complete a questionnaire based on
symptoms associated with exercise and family history of cardiac
issues.
If you are under 21 years, the questionnaire
should be filled under the supervision/in conjunction with parent(s)/guardian(s).
Of all the cardiac screening tools, the best predictor of sudden
death risk is a positive questionnaire. Those who choose to pursue
further screening however should be aware of the following:-
Testing should be done in a centre where ECG's/ECHO
are being reported by experienced sports cardiologists.
There is a significant percentage that will
have an abnormality which may require further evaluation
A percentage will end up uncertain as to
whether it is safe for them to participate or not.
The Mullabrack GFC Committee would urge
all players over 14 years to download and complete the
questionnaire.
