Match
Friday 11th August
Mullabrack 1:7 to
Grange 0:9
There had been an exciting build up to this
game on Friday night. The Grange who were sitting proudly at the top
of Division 4 were keen to take the scalp of Mullabrack. Following
70 minutes of football it didn't turn out exactly how the Grange had
planned.
The game started frantically with the Grange
taking the first score from play inside 5 minutes, however "the
brack" settled into the game and took 2scores from free's taken by
Paddy Toal and Pip Agnew. The Grange replied after 20 minutes with
another point of their own. John Conlon then took a fine point from
play far out on the right had side leaving the score all square with
15 minutes to go until half time. It was at this stage that the
Grange decided to play to the script and took 4 points without reply
leaving a very dejected Mullabrack side going in on the losing end 7
points to 3 points score line.
Unlike the county team, Mullabrack came
out flying from the blocks at half time and
took a quick point from play through Marty Rice. A Grange reply soon
followed and another point from a free by Paddy Toal leaving the
score 8points to 5 points with 20 minutes to go.
Mullabrack then hit two further points from
play from Philip Murphy and Kevin Smith. With Mullabrack in the
ascendancy the defining moment in the game came when Sean
Henry caught a cross field ball from Paul Jordan in defence and sent
a high ball into the Grange square. Unfortunately the Grange defence
did not deal with the ball and an opportunist strike from Paddy Toal
sent the ball goal ward and Mullabrack into the lead for the first
time. At 1 goal and 7 points for Mullabrack and 8 points for the
Grange an exciting finish was on the cards. Mullabrack defence kept
them in the game with some fine blocking and catching from Stephen
Sands, Christopher Dougan and Stephen Baxter. At midfield Phelim
Sands was winning his fair share of the ball while up front Philip
Murphy and Sean Henry kept the Grange defence busy. Charlie
Agnew then made a couple of changes on the Mullabrack team bringing
on Hugh McSorely and Gareth Smith to settle the team going into the
last 10 minutes. The Grange managed one further point from play, but
it was to be Mullabracks day with scenes of jubilation when the
referee blew the final whistle. Another fine team performance from a
Mullabrack side who seem to be going places this year.
